What does it mean if I have Edema?

Extra cellular water (ECW) refers to fluid outside of the cell and is responsible for electrolyte balance (sodium/potassium) and hydration. ECW balance is 1/3 of total body water so if it is slightly off balance you may experience a “borderline” reading. It is worth noting in follow up scans. High sodium consumption, inflammation from training activity or long-haul flights can sometimes result in a borderline reading.

The reading of “edema” would be more of a reason to follow up with a health care professional for  futher consideration.
